What is a Celebrant?
When I tell people what I do, I am often asked “What is a Celebrant?”.
The answer is a little more complicated than it would seem on the surface. It’s true, a Celebrant is someone who you choose to deliver your wedding service, a vow renewal, or a baby naming. You might also choose a Celebrant to commemorate the life of someone you have lost at their funeral.
But a Celebrant is more than that.
A Celebrant is someone you choose to tell the story of your love. Someone who provides a space in which love is named, expressed and renewed. Whether in a wedding, a vow renewal or a naming ceremony, love is given its voice through your Celebrant.
And at the end of life, your Celebrant reveals the rich tapestry of the life of the person you have lost. Everything they were, weaved into their vibrant story. Your Celebrant gives love its eternal wings.
Below is a little poem I wrote, to try to express my pride at having the best job in the World!
"You're a what?!"
"I’m a Celebrant!” I cry, a little too loud
It’s a trade, no a vocation, of which I am proud!
"But what does that mean?” comes the weary response.
As my practised description begins to dispense.
I am not a Rabbi, an Imam, a Guru, or Reverend
Nor, I dare say, am I some new-fangled trend.
I’m a storyteller at heart, it’s of love that I tell,
at life’s precious moments, or a mournful farewell.
The language of your love is my stock in trade.
If it's not too pretentious, with poetry in-laid.
I will be with you on the worst of your days,
when grief grips your heart, your way forward a haze.
At the end of the aisle, I will stand by your side,
as you and your true love, to your future I guide.
"I’m a Celebrant!” I repeat, as pride fills my chest.
My chosen vocation is quite simply the best!
